How to make a 4 photo collage

  1. Open the square 4 photo collage, or the A4 version if it is going in a frame.
  2. Drag four photos onto the page. They fill the grid in order, left to right and top to bottom, and each one is cropped to fill its frame.
  3. Drag the thumbnails to reorder them. Put the strongest photo top-left — it is where the eye lands first.
  4. Set the borders in the Layout panel: the gap between photos and the margin around them. Set both to zero for a borderless collage, and change the page colour if white borders are not the look.
  5. Download it. Nothing is uploaded at any point; the collage is put together in your own browser.

The same steps work for every layout on this page — the only thing that changes is how many photos fill the grid. Add more photos than the grid holds and the extra ones flow onto a second page, so a 9 photo grid with 18 photos gives you two collages.

Choosing photos that work together

  • Lead with one strong image and let the others support it. Four equally busy photos fight each other.
  • Mix the distances — one wide shot, one medium, one close detail. A collage of four wide shots reads as one blurry place.
  • Keep the colour consistent. Photos edited in different styles look like they came from different days, even when they did not.
  • Mind the crop. Every frame is cropped to the shape of its cell, so keep subjects near the middle. A tall portrait in a wide cell loses its top and bottom.

Sizes

The square layouts are built on a 10 × 10in page, which comes out at 3,000 × 3,000 pixels at 300dpi — plenty for a social post and enough to print a sharp 10in square. The A4 and landscape layouts print at A4. The photo booth strip is the real thing: 2 × 6in, four frames stacked. Every size stays adjustable in the Layout panel, including a custom page of any shape.

Collage, contact sheet, or mood board?

They use the same grid and do different jobs. A collage is a handful of chosen photos arranged to be looked at. A contact sheet is every frame from a shoot, labelled, so somebody can choose — there are layouts for that on the contact sheet templates page. A mood board is a freeform canvas of references for a shoot that has not happened yet; that is what the mood board maker is for.

Common questions

Is there a free photo collage template?
Yes. Every layout on this page is free to open and use, with no account and no upload. Pick one, add your photos, and download it as a PDF.
How do I make a 4 photo collage?
Open the 4 photo collage template, drag in four photos, and reorder them by dragging. Each photo is cropped to fill its frame automatically. Adjust the border width if you want, then download.
Can I download the collage as a JPEG or PNG?
Yes, on the Pro plan, which exports any page as a PNG or JPEG at 300dpi. On the free plan a collage downloads as a PDF, which prints at full quality.
Can I make a collage without borders?
Yes. In the Layout panel, set both the gap between photos and the page margin to zero, and the photos sit edge to edge.
