Video speed tool

Slow down or speed up a video

Slow a clip down to check a moment, or speed it up to scan a long take, without loading the file into an editor. Free on every plan, and the file never leaves your browser.

Drop a video here

It plays straight from your machine. Nothing is uploaded, and the file never leaves this tab.

What it does

Plays a video file from your machine at a speed you choose, from a crawl to several times normal, with frame-by-frame stepping and section looping. It is a review tool, not an editor: nothing is re-encoded and nothing is saved out. The point is to look at footage properly, not to change it.

The file never leaves your browser. There is no upload, no queue, and no size limit beyond what your machine will hold — which is the difference between this and most online video tools.

What it is for

  • Checking a moment. Slow a clip to a quarter speed to see whether the expression you remember is actually there, and step frame by frame once you find it.
  • Scanning a long take. Run an hour of static footage at 4× to find the thirty seconds worth watching.
  • Pulling a still. Step to the exact frame, screenshot it, and you have the reference image for a retouch note.
  • Reviewing technique. Loop a section at half speed — the standard use for anything where timing is the thing being judged.

Playback speed and pitch

Audio is pitch-corrected by the browser at moderate speeds, so speech stays intelligible up to about 2×. Past that it degrades, and below about 0.5× it becomes unusable. If you are reviewing footage for sound rather than picture, keep it inside that range.

Where it fits

Most photographers who shoot some video end up wanting one of two things: a still out of a clip, or a way to check a moment without opening Premiere. This covers both, on any machine, with nothing installed. It is free on every plan, including without an account.

Once you have your stills, the contact sheet maker will lay them out alongside the photographs so the client reviews one document rather than two.

Common questions

How do I slow down a video online?
Open the video speed tool, add a video file from your machine, and set the playback rate below 1×. The file is played locally in your browser and is never uploaded, so it works on any size of file.
Does this change the video file?
No. It is a playback and review tool — nothing is re-encoded and no new file is produced. Use it to inspect footage, find a moment, or pull a screenshot.
Is the video uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and played entirely by your own browser. Nothing is transmitted, which is why there is no upload wait and no file size limit beyond your machine's own memory.
